Do you think PHP was only developed for write Web-Sites?, If you do, I think you are right, the PHP was developed for that, but we know that right now with the growth of this languages we (PHP lovers) could do more than only web development.

I invite you to take a look to this class that uses php instead others languages for do more than web related things:

• PHP Serial: Communicate with a serial port under Linux/Windows. This is an interface to shell for read and write in serial port. It’s a nice project.
• DNServer : Implement a DNS server in pure PHP. This is a DNS resolver, for now it is only single thread, but next weekend It will be multi threaded.
• gDNS: Query a DNS to resolve domain names. I like this project, for many reasons, one of those is that is a great solution if you have not a gethostbyname, or to do a more complex DNS query like MX from a domain, the only need are PHP and sockets. And because my class DNServer was a kind of “reverse-engineer” of this class.
• Thread: A class to implement multi-threaded applications. Very good way to implement Threads extending a class using a Java Thread Class style.

And PHP-GTK is another world of opportunities for do another things with PHP and GTK+:

• PHP IDE with GTK+: Tulip - A PHP-GTK based Code editor, a tool for coding PHP scripts, written using PHP as base language and Gtk as user interface. Tulip has features that make it a good choice to develop free software in a co-operative environment. Tulip has an interface that allows you to set up your projects, and deal with them in a distinct way through an intuitive file explorer tree.

What I want to show in this article is the other side of PHP. And I think is well prepared for non-web development too (because as web-development’s I think there is not a another like or better than PHP).
